CHICAGO, IL – A seventy year old Cubs fan died today at Chicago General Hospital, where she was taken after having suffered injuries from trying to buy a bag of peanuts.
Lois Sims raised her hand at a peanut and cotton candy vendor during the top of the fifth inning of the Cubs 5-3 loss to the Cincinatti Reds. As is the tradition in many ballparks, vendor James Vincent threw the bag of nuts eight rows up to Sims' seat. The peanuts hit Sims in the head, and the woman stood dazed and confused.
Then, Reds slugger Sean Casey hit a homerun which sailed toward Sims, hit her in the chest, and bounced into her handbag. Ravenous Cubs fans tried to scramble for the ball so that they could throw it back onto the field. The fans mistook Sims' screams and flailing arms the wrong way and threw the frail woman, handbag and all, onto the field.
Doctors spent hours trying to get the ball out of Sims' handbag before finally attempting to give her medical attention and pronouncing her dead.
